Weier’s 51-goal haul sees Trentham trump Creek
Hannah Weier continued Trentham’s impressive run of form with a 51-goal performance as the Saints stormed to a 62-21 win over Campbells Creek.
After a highly entertaining yet evenly matched first quarter, the Saints ruthlessly generated a sizeable buffer throughout the next three quarters.
While their typically excellent defence allowed just 11 goals in the remaining 45 minutes, the hosts put on an offensive showcase at Trentham Reserve. Sharna Ford and Amy Vandenham helped Weier deliver another strong showing following her delightful debut the week prior.
The Magpies made two changes following their heavy defeat at Carisbrook, with the versatile Tarni Williams coming into the side alongside 18 and under standout Isobelle Pratt, who was making her season debut at A grade.
Despite being without Emily McDonald and Georgia Fearn, who were instrumental in their second-half surge against Harcourt, Trentham showcased their improved offensive efficiency.
Assisted by Stevie Courtney’s passes, Weier and Ford were an immediate problem for the Campbells Creek defence.
However, the Magpies managed to keep pace with Trentham’s production throughout the first quarter, as the shooting tandem of Heni Moeke and Mia Martin was clicking often.
Despite trailing by four goals at quarter time, the Magpies were encouraged by their solid start and were determined to maintain it after the interval.
While captain Taylah Sartori and Phoebe Jones did well to contain Trentham’s improved attack, Campbells Creek’s aspirations of a competitive fight quickly evaporated in the second quarter by the Saints’ defensive pressure.
With Kerrie Brennan coming on to play goal defence, Madelyne Brennan and Vandenham shifted up to wing defence and centre respectively, giving the hosts a stable defensive presence in the midcourt.
That, coupled with the typically terrific play of Jessica Walker, allowed Trentham to contain the visitors to four goals in the second quarter as the margin built to 12 goals at the main break.
After their defence shone to end the first half, it was Trentham’s attack that stole the show after half time, as Weier was a constantly threatening presence in the attacking goal circle.
Even Campbells Creek’s half time lineup reshuffle couldn’t stop the Saints from pouring on 18 goals in the third quarter, which boosted the margin out to 26 goals at the final change of ends.
Trentham provided the excla-mation point to their third consecutive victory with an 18-3 final quarter to complete an exceptional 41-goal victory.
Alongside Weier’s outstanding haul, her shooting partner also had a productive outing. Ford scored 11 goals while providing valuable assistance to Weier.
Martin and Moeke did the bulk of the scoring for Campbells Creek with 10 and eight goals respectively, while Jones and Williams combined to score all three of the Magpies’ goals in the fourth quarter.
