An explosive 12-goal first quarter was more than enough for Trentham to take care of the tricky Navarre Grasshoppers, eventually finishing as 106-point victors.

All eyes were on AFL legend Brent Harvey at Trentham Reserve on Saturday, as he made the first appearance for the club after he was announced as the Saints’ newest recruit on Thursday evening.

Harvey’s debut wasn’t the only thing Trentham could celebrate early in the match, as club captain, and family friend of Harvey, Joel Dovaston, was a man on a mission right from the opening bounce.

He got plenty of touches of the pink football in the first quarter, involved in numerous goals with assists to James Regan or kicking them himself.

A stellar opening quarter from the hosts left the Grasshoppers shell-shocked, down by 65 points at quarter time.

Navarre managed to compose themselves to be more competitive in the second quarter thanks to the forward presence of Daniel Reading and the defensive prowess of Jayden Fowkes.

Despite that, the Saints outkicked the Grasshoppers four goals to two in the second term, extending their commanding margin to 82 points at half time.

With Navarre desperate to stop Dovaston from dominating the second half, Thomas Fuller and Edward Fanning found more room to make a difference, helping the Saints kick six unanswered goals in the third quarter to have the game wrapped up with a 117-point lead at three-quarter time.

Credit to the Grasshoppers, they continued to fight throughout the final quarter, bringing the margin down to 106 points with three goals in the final stages, however, it didn’t change the assured final result of four points for Trentham.

Regan was once again unstoppable for the Saints, kicking nine goals to extend his lead as the MCDFNL’s leading goalkicker.

Dovaston booted five goals in his best-on-ground performance, while Fuller and Jake Keogh also kicked three.

Trentham named their best players as Dovaston, Regan, Cooper Webber-Mirkin, Fuller, Fanning and Zachary Gervasoni.

Reading and Fowkes were named among Navarre’s best players alongside Will Moloney, Oliver Notting, Zak Varley and Leetyn McKenzie.
