Take a look back on what was making news headlines in the month of July, 10 years, 20 years and 50 years ago.

2015 — 10 years ago

  • Maryborough’s Cambrian Hotel recently found new ownership with Jacki Kelly and Daniel Atkinson taking over the historic pub.

  • Police were calling for witnesses to come forward after a shot was fired into the front bedroom window of a Maryborough home along Campbell Street. Police said there were four occupants in the home at the time of the shooting, but thankfully none were injured.

  • Then Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews visited the Maryborough Education Centre to announce a $15.6 million funding commitment for disadvantaged students state-wide.

2005 — 20 years ago

  • On July 1, Maryborough’s four government schools, Maryborough Primary, Maryborough East Primary, Maryborough Regional College, and Maryborough Specialist School united to form the Maryborough Education Centre.

  • Maryborough Golf Club members prepare to vote on whether a $13 million project will proceed at the Park Road site. The proposal included plans for the development of 60 single suites and 10 dual suites as well as see the clubhouse converted into a multi-million dollar two-storey restaurant and conference centre.

  • Following rain and power delays, Maryborough’s new KFC store officially commences trading from the corner of High and Tuaggra streets after “outgrowing” its site on Tuaggra Street.

1975 — 50 years ago

  • The former ANZ Bank building situated on 186 High Street, Maryborough has been sold at auction for $37,000, equating to roughly over $320,000 in today’s money.

  • Joyce Wagstaff defeated Ken Smith 114 votes to 84 to become a councillor of the now-defunct Talbot-Clunes Shire. According to then shire secretary Ron Pryor, Ms Wagstaff was the first woman councillor in the history of the former Borough of Clunes, established in 1860, the Shire of Talbot, formed in 1865, and the amalgamated shire founded in 1965.
