SES unit invite new members
Maryborough’s SES unit is on the hunt for new members, looking to diversify and strengthen its existing membership for the community’s benefit.

Setting up outside the Bull and Mouth Hotel in Maryborough’s main street for the next three Saturday’s, the organisation is hopeful membership will spark some interest locally.
Having already had a presence in High Street for the last two Saturday’s, Maryborough SES unit’s Jesse Wright said there have been encouraging signs already.
“We had plenty of interest on our first and second weekend and we’re hopeful that continues,” he said.
“At the end of the day we need more members, we’re all getting older and we need younger people going forward to bolster the membership.
“We all have our own lives to live and we always say family first, then work and SES comes after that.
“If we have more members, we’re able to take the weight off the members who are always turning out and share the load a bit, it makes it easier for everyone.”
The unit is hopeful of attracting up to 10 new members and Mr Wright said SES roles are as varied and diverse as its membership.
“There’s a job for everyone in SES, we are particularly looking for people interested in doing practical things, but if people are interested in the administrative side of things there is scope for that too,” he said.
“The things we do are search and rescue, flood and storm events and road rescue among many other things.
“We also assist other agencies like police, CFA and ambulance — we do a lot in the community.”
Beyond assisting residents and the broader community in times of emergency, Mr Wright said the SES also offers a range of life skills.
“SES can offer a lot to members, there’s a lot of training you can do that carries over to life skills,” he said.
“Things like first aid training and working with tools, all the way up to assisting with road rescues — the training is varied and there is something of interest for everyone.
“We’ve all got different backgrounds and interests, it’s about bringing that together and working collaboratively and developing our own skills as we go.”
The Maryborough SES unit will be outside the Bull and Mouth Hotel in High Street, Maryborough from 9 am until 12 pm on August 23, 30 and September 6.
