Saints soar over Giants in high-scoring win
A remarkable second quarter set the table for Trentham to comfortably surpass the Maryborough Giants by 60 points in a showcase of high-scoring football.
Both teams threw caution to the wind at Trentham Reserve, combining for 64 scoring shots throughout the contest.
It was the Giants who came out of the blocks ahead, kicking five goals in the first quarter to give themselves a 12 point lead and a chance at a major upset.
However, the Saints weren’t entertained by that proposition, putting the hammer down with an eight goal second quarter, while simultaneously smiting the Giants forward line to two goals to flip the game on its head as the Saints entered half time with a 25 point lead.
The Saints continued to shell the Giants defence with opportunities in the third quarter, however the Giants did well to limit Trentham’s 12 scoring shots to only five goals while kicking three goals of their own.
The Giants had a very slight chance of completing the comeback heading into the final term with a 42 point deficit, and unfortunately for them, the Saints weren’t handing out any prayers on Saturday.
They continued to flex their offensive muscle, kicking 6.7 to the Giants’ more efficient 4.1 to put the finishing touches on their 3-1 start to the 2025 season.
Trentham star James Regan has continued his magnificent form, kicking seven goals to improve his tally to 22 goals.
He was named in the best players alongside Ryan Thiesz and Thomas Fuller, who kicked four and three goals respectively, Joseph Nesci, Joel Dovaston and Mitchell Peeler.
Despite now starting the season 0-4, the Giants gave a good account of themselves with Rhys Wagstaff, Seth Hoskin, Brandon Carter, Jude Gourley, Matthew Johnston and Scott Miller named the best players for the visitors.
Carter and captain Declan Wagstaff led the way in the forward line, kicking three goals apiece.
