Redbacks continue on undefeated spree
The Carisbrook Redbacks remain undefeated in third place after a comfortable 66-point victory over the Maryborough Giants on Saturday.
However, the Redbacks didn’t have it all their own way and only led at half time by 12 points. It was only in the second half that the home team found some momentum courtesy of some strong ruck work by Jackson Bowen and some great running play from Tom Gardam to link up through the defensive half of the Giants to kick 10 goals to two.
After 10 minutes of back-and-forth play, the opening goal of the game came from Darcy Bond when the ball was kicked out of bounds by the Giants full back, and Bond scored from the resultant free kick.
The Giants’ Jacob Rollason was awarded a 50 metre penalty and he took advantage by rushing forward and kicking long to where Matt Johnson marked in the goal square and goaled. Then, a minute later, Karson Guareschi was on the end of a Giants forward pass, and the visitors were up and about.
Late in the term, Tim Rinaldi kicked his first of three goals for the game, but youngster, Riley Govan, goaled from a set shot for the Giants to lead at quarter time.
The second quarter was evenly matched until the Redbacks kicked three goals in succession through Jack Tenace, Bailey Walhouse, and Tom Gardam to lead at the 20-minute mark. Atticus Cullinan goaled from a free kick to have the Giants down by just one goal.
But in the dying stages of the half, Carisbrook came up with an exciting piece of play when Jackson Bowen, tapped the ball to Tom Gardam, who hand passed to Oliver Wilson, who kicked a long running goal that was shepherded through by Tim Rinaldi, and Carisbrook went into the half time break full of energy.
This was basically where the game ended as the Redbacks dominated the scoring in the second half. The Redbacks had 13 scoring shots to one in the third term and broke the game open to lead by 53 points at the final change.
They continued their dominance in the final term, but the Giants did score goals through Declan Wagstaff and Matt Johnson. Jackson Bowen was leading the way and he kicked an inspirational goal in the dying stages when he split a pack and goaled on the run.
Bowen, Bray Bartlett, Todd Bryant, and Mitch Treacy were amongst the Redbacks’ better players, as was Cooper Tatchell and Tom Gardam, with Tim Rinaldi kicking three goals.
The Giants named Scott Miller, Riley Govan, Brandon Carter and Peter Wytkamp as their best along with Kaylab Eggers and Seth Hoskin with Matt Johnson the only multiple goal scorer.
