Radio show embraces health
The community is invited to discuss emotional wellbeing and mental health on local community radio.
A local radio show exploring the complexities of emotional wellbeing is seeking guests from all walks of life.
The weekly radio show Mental Health Matters embodies the phrase ‘a burden shared is a burden halved’.
It asks, if mental health were discussed more openly, what good might that do a community who could just tune in on the radio?
That’s the thesis statement local arts therapist and counsellor Susan Day seems to be exploring each week on community radio station Goldfields FM 99.1.
Each week Ms Day has heartfelt conversations, gets expert insight, and discusses creative approaches to mental health with guests from all walks of life.
“Mental health isn’t just a clinical topic — it’s a human one,” she said.
“Whether you’re a healthcare professional, a lived-experience advocate, an artist, a teacher, a parent, or someone navigating your own healing journey, your voice matters. This show is about honouring those voices and creating a space where they can be shared with compassion and curiosity.”
Ms Day said she wanted to raise awareness of mental health in the Central Goldfields Shire.
“We’re just saying to people it’s okay not to be okay. It’s okay to have a bad day. Often mental health issues can be temporary and they certainly can be managed,” she said.
Although the show is not prescriptive, and encourages locals to seek professional support for their mental health, Ms Day said it starts the conversation.
“A shared experience is not only halved but almost dissipates. You’re not alone,” she said.
Ms Day hopes her show bucks a trend of years past that ignored mental health as a subject and instead approaches it with compassion.
“When I grew up, I never spoke about my own mental health issues at all. I just didn’t think anyone knew, or would understand, or cared,” she said.
It’s a message she said locals are supporting.
“People are really behind it and encouraging which is nice. They want to hear the stories [and] a lot of them want to share their stories,” Ms Day said.
Those that tune in can expect to hear from experts, but also everyday people, which Ms Day said is as important.
“Their stories are as valid as anybody with a qualification. They may not know all the fancy words but they can share something others can identify with and they can get something out of,” she said.
That’s why she’s on the hunt for future guests, from experts through to people with a story to tell.
“This show is about connection,” she said.
“It’s about reminding people that they’re not alone, and that healing can happen in many forms—through words, through art, through community.”
