Pumas begin their 10th season with a controlling victory over Moorabool
Maryborough began its 10th AFL Masters Country Victoria football season in style with a comprehensive 48-point victory against Moorabool Valley on Sunday.
The Pumas scored the first three goals of the match against the Crocs and then cruised in the second half, on the way to a 11.9 (75) to 4.3 (27) win at Princes Park.
The home team had matchwinners across the ground against an undermanned Moorabool Valley side which was bolstered by several Maryborough players. Paul Cicchini, Lauchlan Williams, Brad Fraser, Jake Meyer and Jeremy Frame were among the Pumas’ best as they took control in the first half.
“Our first game as a club 11 years ago was against Moorabool Valley and they thrashed us, so today’s result showed just how far we’ve come in that time,” Maryborough president Travis Cain said.
“We had a real push over the summer to drum up excitement and enthusiasm for our 10th season. It was terrific to see some of those players who have been with us since our first season in 2015 but also a lot of new players.
“This club has never been just about winning or losing, but we’ve been keen to encourage those players, who are finished playing competitive club footy, to continue to enjoy the game at good standard.”
Moorabool Valley hit back in the third term with the only goal of the quarter. However, Maryborough steadied in the final quarter with three late goals.
Multiple goal scorers for the home team include Chris Cudia (two goals) and Brett Forti (two goals), while Daniel Smith kicked a drop-kick super goal (worth two goals).
Other goal scorers for Mary-borough were Scott Hurley, Wayne Walsh, Jibb Iglesias, Scott Newitt and Ivan Reis.
Maryborough’s next match is an away encounter with Macorna Tigers on April 27.
Training for AFL Masters football is at 6 pm on Wednesday evenings at Princes Park.
