Newstead shocks Harcourt with first loss
In one of the major shocks of the 2026 season so far, Newstead handed early premiership favourites Harcourt its first loss of 2026 with a hard-fought 12-point victory on Saturday.
The contest was a low-scoring affair early, as both teams struggled to generate consistent opportunities under wet conditions at Harcourt Recreation Reserve.
After a plethora of uncharacteristic kicking miscues that prohibited them from fully capitalising on their early dominance, Harcourt held a narrow six-point advantage at quarter time and extended that lead to 16 points by the main break as Newstead managed just one goal and six behinds in the first half.
Despite trailing at half-time, Newstead remained within striking distance and turned the game on its head with a dominant third quarter.
The Steaders finally found their rhythm in attack, booting five goals for the term while restricting Harcourt to a solitary behind.
William Moran was instrumental during Newstead’s match-winning burst, while Liam O’Brien and Lachlan O’Brien provided plenty of drive through the midfield.
Michael Dalrymple and Cordie McKendry were also influential as Newstead transformed a 16-point deficit into a 16-point lead by the final change.
Harcourt fought hard to respond in the final quarter and outscored the visitors, but the damage had already been done.
The Lions kicked 1.5 in the last term but were unable to make significant inroads as Newstead held firm to secure a memorable victory.
The win was built on Newstead’s ability to control the game after half-time, particularly through the midfield where Liam O’Brien, Lincoln White and Moran led the way. Lachlan O’Brien, Dalrymple and McKendry rounded out the visitors’ best players.
For Harcourt, Billy Quirk, Mark Noonan, Taylar McKnight, Dan Chaplin, Braydon Vaz and Benjamin Leech battled strongly, but the Lions were unable to maintain the momentum that had seen them win their opening eight matches of the season.
The result throws the premiership race wide open and further enhances Newstead’s credentials as a genuine contender.
For Harcourt, the loss serves as a reminder that there are no easy games in the MCDFNL, with several clubs now showing they are capable of challenging their benchmark.
