Maryborough residents may have noticed a faster internet connection with a broadband tower going up at the edge of town.

The white tower near Sutton Tools, off Bassett Street and the Pyrenees Highway, is a part of the State Government’s Connecting Victoria Program which aims to connect the state through investing in mobile, broadband and Wi-Fi infrastructure.

The tower is amongst the program’s first Satellite to Fixed Wireless upgrades to be completed providing nbn Fixed Wireless service to more than 500 premises in Maryborough.

That means eligible residents and businesses can access download speeds of up to 100 Megabits each second making the internet easier to access for work, study, and play.

Member for Ripon Martha Haylett said Maryborough’s local upgrades are just one part of the government’s broader $550 million investment into the Connecting Victoria Program.

“Fast, reliable internet keeps our community connected. This new mobile tower has helped so many locals already,” she said.

According to nbn’s website, the network uses a hybrid 4G/5G technology to transmit data over radio signals from the tower to an nbn outdoor antenna fitted to a home or business.

That signal is then sent to an nbn connection box installed inside before going to your connected devices.

In addition to the broadband tower, through the Connecting Victoria Program, Maryborough has seen the completion of two mobile 5G upgrade projects and one telecommunications resilience project.

However, Ms Haylett recognises there is still more work to be done with the Federal Government having a role to play.

“I will continue to advocate to federal politicians to fix more blackspots and help us improve mobile reception in our country communities,” she said.

Residents can find out more, or take advantage of the upgrades if eligible, by contacting their chosen internet provider who will organise the connection.
