New exhibition hits gallery
Maryborough artist Milton Moss never fails to capture the extremities of weather patterns that cross the Moolort Plains.
His new exhibition, Capturing the Wild, showcases the best of all seasons throughout the Central Goldfields and the surrounding Central Victoria region.
A retired advertising art director, Mr Moss brings decades of creative experience to his work, blending his background in photography with a renewed passion for painting.
Beginning his career in Melbourne’s printing industry as a letterpress and offset printer, he later moved into advertising, working across major national accounts before establishing the successful Moss Group agency with his son, Darren Moss.
Now retired, Mr Moss spends much more time painting, photographing, and chasing storms nearly every day, often pulling over to photograph fascinating cloud patterns when driving or finding the right moment to capture sand or lighting storms.
His work has been exhibited locally at the Newstead Arts Hub, Shedshaker Brewery Company, and other venues in Castlemaine and surrounding townships.
Reflecting on his journey, Mr Moss said he always loved art and drawing.
“It was the only thing I was really good at in school. Art led me into a career in advertising and my personal art took a back seat for a number of decades. But I’m so glad I started again,” he said.
“Now I have time to pursue my love of art. I have always loved wild weather landscape photography and one day the penny dropped. I decided to combine my two loves; using my photographic experience of being out in the weather and my passion for painting these landscapes in oils.
“The end result is a collection captured wildly with my lens and dramatically reimagined on canvas.”
Prior to this weekend’s exhibition opening, Central Goldfields Shire mayor Ben Green said Mr Moss has captured the essence of the region with extraordinary sensitivity and skill.
“His work celebrates the beauty, drama and character of the Central Goldfields landscape, and we are proud to showcase the talent of a local artist whose creativity continues to inspire our community,” he said.
Capturing the Wild will officially open this weekend at the Central Goldfields Art Gallery on Saturday, May 23 at 2 pm.
The exhibition will run until August 16, 2026.
