MCDFNL Round 9 Football Preview Harcourt v Newstead
A blockbuster clash awaits this weekend as ladder leader, Harcourt hosts an in-form Newstead outfit in what shapes as one of the games of the season.

Harcourt remains the team to beat in 2026, continuing its unbeaten start with an 84-point victory over Natte Bealiba.
The Lions were challenged early but gradually took control through the class of Braydon Vaz, Sam Gale, Thomas Walters, Mark Noonan, and Geoffrey Jolly. Baxter Gurd was a major threat in attack with five goals, while the Lions once again showcased their depth across the ground.
Newstead, however, will arrive full of confidence after bouncing back from its loss to the Maryborough Giants with an emphatic 85-point win over Maldon.
The Steaders were dominant from the opening bounce, with William Moran, Liam O’Brien, Joel Smith and Ethan Maltby all influential. Sam Winnard continued his outstanding season with seven goals and now has 29 goals from seven games.
The key battle could be between Newstead’s dangerous forward line and Harcourt’s highly-rated defence. Winnard has been one of the competition’s most prolific goal kickers, but he will face his biggest test against a Lions backline that has consistently restricted opposition scoring throughout the season.
The midfield contest also looms as a crucial factor. Harcourt’s experienced brigade will look to limit the influence of Moran, Smith, and the O’Brien brothers around stoppages.
Expect a finals-like atmosphere and a high-quality contest. Newstead has the firepower to challenge the ladder leaders, but Harcourt’s experience and defensive structure make them the favourites heading into what should be a terrific encounter.
