MCDFNL Round 16 Football Preview — Navarre vs Maryborough Giants
Fresh from the bye, the Maryborough Giants face one of their toughest assignments of the season when they travel to take on an in-form Navarre outfit at Navarre Recreation Reserve.
The Giants will be well rested after a week off and will be keen to build on the competitive football they have produced in recent rounds. Their last outing was a narrow three-point loss to Lexton, a game in which they led early in the final quarter before the Tigers snatched victory in the closing minutes.
Karson Guareschi continued his impressive season up forward, while Rhys Egan and Atticus Cullinan provided plenty of spark around goal. Through the midfield, Kaylab Eggers, Riley Govan and Scott Miller have consistently driven the Giants, with Declan and Rhys Wagstaff also enjoying strong seasons.
Navarre enters the clash brimming with confidence after an impressive eight-point victory over fellow premiership contender Newstead. The Grasshoppers produced three quarters of outstanding football before withstanding a late charge to cement their place among the league’s genuine premiership threats.
Sam Walker and Oliver Notting were outstanding through the midfield against the Steaders, while Sam Rickard again showed his versatility by finishing with four goals. Up forward, captain Riley Bibby looms as a major danger after bagging five goals last week, with Jack Mentha providing another reliable target.
The Giants’ defence will need to be at its very best to contain Navarre’s dangerous forward line, while at the other end Karson Guareschi and Rhys Egan face a stern challenge against a defence led by Jayden Fowkes and Angus Bade, who have been instrumental in the Grasshoppers’ outstanding defensive record this season.
The midfield battle promises to be pivotal. If Eggers, Govan and Miller can match the influence of Walker, Notting and Rickard around the stoppages, the Giants will give themselves every opportunity to remain in the contest.
While the Giants have shown they are capable of matching it with quality opposition, Navarre’s outstanding recent form, balanced line-up and home-ground advantage make the Grasshoppers deserved favourites.
