MCDFNL Round 14 Football Preview — Avoca vs Newstead
The Bulldogs continue to battle hard every week despite enduring a difficult season, but they will need to produce one of their best performances of the year if they are to challenge a Newstead side that has developed into one of the competition’s genuine premiership threats.
Avoca is coming off a 65-point defeat to the fast-finishing Natte Bealiba. Although the Swans controlled much of the contest, the Bulldogs never stopped competing, with Alexander Riches producing another outstanding performance.
Bryce Howell, Daniel Howell, Jordan Thomas, Toby Beavis and Mitchell Wardlaw also worked tirelessly in an encouraging display despite the result.
The Bulldogs’ challenge has been maintaining scoreboard pressure for four quarters. They have shown they can compete around the contest, but have found it difficult to consistently contain the league’s stronger attacking sides.
Newstead, meanwhile, arrives full of confidence after dismantling Lexton by 118 points. The Steaders have now bounced back emphatically from their narrow loss to Talbot, recording successive 100-point victories.
William Moran continued his outstanding season with another best-on-ground display against the Tigers, while Lincoln White, Joel Smith, Sam Winnard, Liam O’Brien and Hayden Hall all played starring roles.
The midfield battle looms as the key to the contest. Avoca will rely heavily on Daniel Howell, Riches and Bryce Howell to match Newstead’s impressive on-ball brigade led by Moran, Smith and White.
