MCDFNL Round 13 Football Preview Newstead v Lexton
Newstead will be aiming to maintain its place among the competition’s leading finals contenders when it hosts Lexton in an important round 13 clash.
The Steaders responded in emphatic fashion to their narrow loss against Talbot, producing a dominant four-quarter performance to defeat Dunolly by 137 points.
Newstead was in control from the opening bounce, holding the Eagles scoreless in the first quarter before cruising to a 21.28.(154) to 2.5.(17) victory.
Lincoln White led the way in a polished team display, with Liam O’Brien, Alex Murphy, William Moran, Joel Smith and Lachlan O’Brien also among the best.
Sam Winnard continued his outstanding season with another six-goal haul, while Liam O’Brien added five and Lachlan O’Brien four as Newstead again showcased its attacking firepower.
Lexton, meanwhile, will be desperate to bounce back after a disappointing 40-point loss to the fast-finishing Natte Bealiba. The Tigers started well but were overrun after quarter time, slipping outside the top eight.
Thomas Cullinan again led from the front for Lexton and received strong support from Aiden Broughton, Justin Kennedy, Luke Madden, Pat Parr and Hunter Greene.
The Tigers will need another big effort from that group if they are to challenge one of the competition’s highest-scoring sides.
Containing Winnard looms as one of Lexton’s biggest challenges. The Newstead spearhead has been in outstanding form and, with the support of the O’Brien brothers, gives the Steaders multiple dangerous scoring options.
