Maryborough Magpies commence 2026 season
The Maryborough Football Netball Club launched its 2026 season with a junior jumper presentation night on Thursday night.
The under 10s, under 12s and under 14s proudly received their playing guernseys for the 2026 season, a special moment made even more exciting with the 12s and 14s playing their first games on the weekend.
“Our focus is on creating a positive, inclusive environment where every child can develop their skills and most importantly, enjoy their footy,” junior coordinator Ryan Boyes said.
The under 12s opened the Maryborough Magpies season with an impressive display in their clash with Maiden Gully JFC at Princes Park, making the most of a warm Anzac Day to secure a comfortable 27-point victory.
A dominant first half from Manny Shepherd, who booted five goals, set the tone early, while Charlie Smith controlled the midfield with flair and energy.
First-game player Harvey Congram provided strong support, showing plenty of promise in his debut outing.
Across half back, Luca Walker’s tackling, pace and clean kicking repeatedly drove the Magpies forward, ensuring the side maintained control throughout.
The under 14s were even more impressive in their season opener at Princes Park on Sunday, over-whelming White Hills Red in a one-sided contest.
After a steady build-up in the clubrooms, the Magpies burst into action with an explosive first half that set the tone for the day.
A tight-knit core group led the charge, with teamwork the standout feature across the ground. Coach Ben Heathcock was full of praise for his young side, highlighting their commitment and willingness to play for each other.
The highlight came from Jordon Akdogan, whose five-bounce run down the lakeside wing set up a teammate’s goal in a thrilling passage of play. Scoring was shared, with Connor Day-Lock adding a fitting finish, kicking truly after the final siren.
The Magpies ran out emphatic winners, 27.15 (177) to nil, in a performance to remember.
