Magpie juniors fight hard at Princes Park
It was an early season home-coming for the Maryborough Magpies, as all three of their junior football teams played at Princes Park on the weekend.
The under 10s put in another spirited performance in round two, taking on Huntly.
Despite the challenge, the young Magpies battled hard across all four quarters, showing plenty of determination and improvement.
A highlight of the day came from Tex Harnetty, who thrilled team-mates and spectators alike with a running goal.
The side will take positives from the contest as they continue building into the season and look ahead to next week’s match-up.
The Maryborough under 12s endured a difficult start against St Killian’s at Princes Park on Saturday, with the early scoreboard pressure proving costly in an eventual 7.12.(54) to 1.0.(6) defeat.
To the Magpies’ credit, the side refused to drop their heads, lifting their intensity after half time and competing much more strongly as the game wore on.
Harvey Congram continued his impressive form in the ruck, providing plenty of contests around the ground, while Xavier Clark battled relentlessly in defence under constant pressure.
Oscar Bramley was among the side’s most courageous performers, producing what was arguably his best game yet for the club with a determined four-quarter effort.
The Magpies finished the match positively and with grading rounds now complete, will look to build on those encouraging signs heading into the upcoming weeks of competition.
On Sunday, Maryborough’s under 14s suffered their first loss of the season, meeting a strong and well-drilled Huntly side that ran out convincing 21.17.(143) to 1.0.(6) winners.
Despite the heavy result, the young Magpies continued to battle hard across four quarters and never stopped competing, even when momentum was against them.
While the visitors proved difficult to contain, there were still positives to come from the contest.
Connor Day-Lock maintained his impressive form, taking the game on and matching up strongly against Huntly’s bigger-bodied players in a determined performance.
Although it wasn’t the result the Magpies were hoping for, the group will take valuable lessons from the outing.
With a big week ahead on the training track, the focus now turns to regrouping, improving and bouncing back strongly in next week’s match.
