Local clubs set to host fundraiser for family
The Newstead and Campbells Creek Football Netball Clubs are pooling their resources this weekend to rally around a valued family of supporters currently going through tough times.
After the Steaders and Magpies do battle at Newstead Recreation Reserve on Saturday, both clubs will come together for a fundraising auction, with all proceeds donated to Tiff Munn, Colin Purvis and their three children.
Munn and Purvis have deep connections to both clubs as generous supporters and volunteers.
Alongside her efforts as a C grade player, Munn is Newstead’s under 11 netball coach, an experience she calls extremely rewarding.
“I just really enjoy watching every child’s development starting from not knowing how to play and being able to support them, to be a better player,” she said.
After spending his junior player days at the Magpies nest, Purvis and his brother Clem sponsor several community sporting clubs through their local business, Rural and Outdoors, including Campbells Creek and Newstead.
“We love seeing kids getting out and about, being outside and enjoying the family and social aspect of it,” Purvis said.
On April 11, Munn and Purvis were having a great day at Newstead Recreation Reserve, staying after Munn’s netball match to enjoy a social function at the clubrooms.
While participating in a laid-back trivia night, they received a harrowing phone call from one of their neighbours saying their house was on fire.
“By the time we got here, it was fully ablaze. It was pretty heartbreaking to see, especially with the kids,” Purvis said.
“You never expect to go to the footy and have to come back with only the clothes that you’re wearing. We had a great day over there, and when we came home, we had nothing other than the caravan in the carport.
“It’s very hard as you’re moving through those days and weeks after because you don’t really know what you need or what you want.
“It’s just been a struggle to try and replace the little things that are irreplaceable.”
As the family looks to rebuild their lives, Newstead’s committee felt emboldened to assist them in any way it can.
Driven by vice president Ruby McNabb, the club approached the family about how they could help them get back on their feet again, a gesture that surprised and shocked Munn.
“It’s not something that I thought such a small country community club would do for a family that’s involved with their club,” she said.
“It means everything to us. We are ever so grateful to both clubs for hosting and organising such an event.
“It means a lot to our family to see both communities getting behind and supporting us.”
For Newstead Football Netball Club president Madison James, this weekend’s fundraiser is what community sporting clubs are all about.
“It’s a group of people creating a community and the values that we stand for as a community, including helping those that need it,” he said.
“I think it’s really important, especially for small towns like Newstead and others in our league, where there’s not a whole lot of other places to go or other places to be.
“Credit to Campbells Creek, who jumped on board as soon as we asked basically to try and help where they could.
“We invite everyone to come down to the event if they can. It’s just a good way that we thought we could help with those immediate needs that they might have and help them better their situation.”
This Saturday’s fundraising auction at the Newstead Recreation Reserve starts at 6 pm. Attendees wishing to have a roast meal at the event are encouraged to book by visiting https://square.link/u/8gqOiXq1 to assist with catering.
