Grasshoppers cruise to 59-goal win over Magpies
Navarre has extended its blistering winning streak to five games thanks to a 80-21 demolition of Campbells Creek.
After a 20-2 second quarter, the Grasshoppers followed it up with an even more convincing 24-2 third quarter to fully stamp their authority on the match.
The Magpies did show some fight in the fourth quarter, but it didn’t stop Navarre from another confidence-boosting win ahead of their blockbuster clash with Talbot this weekend.
Led by Reagan Fulford, Heni Moeke and Claire Jones, Campbells Creek started the match with a nice offensive rhythm against a vaunted defensive unit.
However, the shooting of Zanaiya Bergen and Aliza Lockhart provided the nitro boost for the visitors to accelerate away with 24 first-quarter goals.
Despite boasting a 16-goal advantage at quarter time, the former Nalder Tracey Trophy winner Jess Parry led Grasshoppers defence suffocated Campbells Creek’s promising attack in the second quarter.
Grace Long also made an immediate impact off the bench at goal keeper as the visitors allowed just two goals in the second term, as the margin increased to 34 goals by half time.
Even with the Magpies attempting to turn the tide offensively with Jones and Mia Martin having stints at shooter, Parry and Long continued their shutdown surveillance in the second half.
Assisted by 18 and under midcourter Saieh Summerfield, Bergen and Lockhart compounded Navarre’s damage, with Lockhart in particular showcasing a robotic shooting accuracy.
Despite trailing by 56 goals at three-quarter time, Campbells Creek continued to battle in the closing stages, with Fulford, Molly Kennedy and Taylah Sartori restricting the Grasshoppers to 12 goals in the fourth quarter.
Led by Lockhart’s astonishing 29 consecutive goals without a miss, Navarre secured another convincing victory to their resume. Bergen top-scored with 45 goals while Parry made a shooting cameo in the fourth quarter, adding six.
The Magpies had four players find the bottom of the net on Saturday, with Fulford leading the charge on nine goals.
Martin was close behind with eight goals in the second half, while Jones and Moeke netted a combined four goals.
