Giants claim victory in blow for blow match
The Maryborough Giants have produced one of their best performances of the season, finishing strongly to defeat Newstead by 11 points at Newstead Recreation Reserve.
In a high-quality contest featuring several momentum swings, the Giants showed composure in the final quarter to overrun one of the competition’s in-form sides.
Newstead started brightly with four first-quarter goals, but the Giants matched them around the contest and remained within striking distance thanks to strong midfield pressure and efficient ball movement going forward.
The Giants then took control in the second term, piling on six goals to four to edge ahead by four points at half time. Karson Guareschi was proving dangerous around goal and eventually finished with three majors in an influential display up forward.
Newstead responded after the main break and briefly regained momentum through Joel Smith and Sam Winnard, with Smith particularly influential around stoppages and inside 50. Smith finished with four goals and was a constant threat throughout the afternoon.
The Steaders took a narrow three-point lead into the final quarter, setting up a tense finish.
However, the Giants lifted when it mattered most, kicking the final two goals of the game and restricting Newstead to just three behinds in the last term. Their defensive pressure and composure with ball in hand proved decisive late in the contest.
Scott Miller led strongly from the front for the Giants and was well supported by Cody Wright, Rhys Wagstaff, Cobie Read, Riley Govan and Declan Wagstaff in an excellent team performance.
Karson Guareschi’s three goals were crucial, while Brandon Carter also hit the scoreboard with two majors in another lively display.
For Newstead, Joel Smith was outstanding with four goals, while Lachlan O’Brien, Isaac Fofana, Cordie McKendry, William Moran and Michael Dalrymple all battled hard in defeat.
The victory is a major confidence boost for the Giants and keeps them in touch with the competition’s middle pack, while Newstead will be disappointed after surrendering a lead at three-quarter time on their home ground.
