Held on June 21, 12 locals put on a brave and empowering performance in front of nearly 300 people in an effort to raise much needed funds for the local oncology unit.

Event organiser and participant Nick Weaver said it was an exciting evening full of emotion.

“That was a great night. A lot of fun, a lot of laughter, and there was certainly some tears as well. A night full of all forms of emotions,” he said.

“I guess it was just the raw feelings of the performers reading why we wanted to do it. We all wrote it down but we didn’t read it ourselves. That got into the crowd so they could think ‘why are these people are doing it? Who has lost a relative or a close friend with cancer?’ That is what was really touching.

“We were nervous, no doubt. But once we had a couple of drinks and we were doing our dance, it happened so quickly. By the time the dancing starts, it’s over.”

With the fundraiser now in its fourth year, Mr Weaver said the event is still much loved by everyone attending.

“Once we were doing our dances and we’re getting our gear off, both ladies and guys, the crowd was right into it. They just loved it, just the roar, the laughter, clapping and the standing ovation,” he said.

It was just a fantastic night. It’s great that we’re into our fourth year, I guess, and we’re still getting a great crowd. People are still wanting to see it.

“We had people talking to the performers after it, and the next day saying ‘I want to do this next year’. People are still keen to do it and be part of it’.”

Mr Weaver said there is still an opportunity for locals to donate.

“We’re actually going to leave the lines open, probably until the end of July,” he said.

“People are coming in to get what they bought on a night, and we are still giving people the opportunity to donate as well. So they’re most welcome to come in and donate.”

While the amount raised on the night is still accumulating, Mr Weaver is aiming for another $5000.

“If we get to $35,000 or more, who knows, if we get a couple of companies that are willing to donate a good amount, we might get that target,” he said.

“If people want to come in and just make a donation, especially if it’s a business, that would be awesome.”

The Highland Society is very appreciative of the generosity shown by the community so far.

“We had a couple of businesses that donated something to our silent auction on the night and

we had some great companies

that did their goods and services and donated their time. So that was really good too,” Mr Weaver said.
