Buzz Nunn named ‘Legend of the Tongs’ finalist
Harcourt Football Netball Club long-serving volunteer Buzz Nunn finished as one of eight finalists in the Bunnings’ Legend of the Tongs initiative.
The competition is a nationwide search to recognise the local volunteers who sacrifice their time to fire up the barbecue at local football/netball clubs during the season.
With over 900 club volunteers nominated across the country, Nunn won a trip for two to the AFL Footy Festival and the 2025 AFL Grand Final for finishing as a finalist.
The Grand Final experience is on top of the barbecue prize pack which featured a Jumbuck six Burner barbecue and a Bunnings pop-up marquee donated to the club after Nunn was nominated.
On the eve of the grand final, Nunn competed alongside the seven other finalists to cook the best snag and be named Legend of the Golden Tongs, with the winner also claiming $25,000 in Bunnings products and materials for their club.
While Bundoora Junior Football Club volunteer Geoff Wills was the overall winner, Nunn said the experience of his first AFL Grand Final was spectacular.
“It would have been nice to win it but out of 900 people, to get down to the final eight was fantastic,” he said.
“The Grand Final was a fantastic show — we were right up the top but we had the best view, you could see everything that was going to happen.
“It was a great experience and Bunnings did a fantastic job organising the weekend.”
Nunn has been involved with the Harcourt Football Netball Club for over 30 years, a constant presence at Harcourt Recreation Reserve near the barbecue or at the gate.
Nunn said his committed dedication for the club comes from his desire to see the Lions to not only survive, but thrive, encouraging other locals to make a similar difference at their local clubs.
“Volunteering is very important, if you haven’t got volunteers, a lot of clubs aren’t going to go anywhere,” he said.
“After meeting all of the other finalists from the other clubs, we were all in the same boat about volunteering, we are all trying to raise money for our clubs and keep the clubs going.”
