Avoca topple home side Talbot by strong margin
A potent Avoca outfit have won their second match for the season despite a home ground advantage for Talbot on the weekend.
Avoca were quick to prove just why they were the favourites heading into round two on the weekend, kickstarting the game with a 20-point first quarter at the Talbot Recreation Reserve.
Trailing by 12 points when the whistle blew to mark the second quarter, Talbot knew they were up for a task, and it only became more challenging from there.
A 13-goal second quarter from the Bulldogs saw the scores rest at 15-33 by half time, with Avoca’s Maddy Egan the visitors’ main avenue to goal.
While the Doggies were successful in increasing their lead to more than double Talbot’s in the third, the home side began to push back, scoring a respectable 10 goals against the stronger side.
In the final quarter, with the match all but done and dusted, Talbot gave it their all to outscore Avoca 10 goals to eight through some dominant possession and strong defence from the likes of Abbey Klemm, Melissa Scott and Alicia McMurray.
While the eventual scoreline read 35-60 in Avoca’s favour, Talbot’s tenacity at the ball can’t be understated with Alicia McMurray and Eleisha Phelps both providing avenues to goal, scoring at 80 and 67 percent respectively.
On the other side of the court, Egan continues to be a powerhouse in front of goal, scoring 37 goals while missing only six to shoot at 86 percent accuracy, while younger offsider Gina Beavis scored 23 goals at 63 percent accuracy.
