Members of the public are being invited to have their say on the naming of two roads in Avoca.

The proposed names, Kathleen Street and Rose Mary Way, would commemorate the Walker sisters born in Avoca in the 1880s and who both served in the Australian Army Nursing Service during World War I. The sisters were posted to Convalescent Depot, Harefield Park, London with Rose Mary also serving in Lemnos and Egypt.

At last week’s meeting, council voted to put the names Kathleen Street and Rose Mary Way out for public submissions.

Pyrenees Shire mayor Tanya Kehoe said a proposal to name the two roads after the Walker sisters would be a lovely way to remember their wartime service while linking them back to their birthplace.

“We will put these names out for public submissions and see what the community thinks,” Cr Kehoe said.

Geographic Names Victoria oversees the naming of roads and places in Victoria following naming rules based on national standards.

Appropriate naming of roads is essential to identify locations for managing emergencies and delivering goods and services, including mail.
