A goal every 36 seconds keeps Maldon away
There were 100 reasons for Avoca to celebrate their performance on Saturday, putting on an offensive masterclass against Maldon by scoring 100 goals.
Astonishing, the Bulldogs averaged a goal every 36 seconds, an exceptional performance which is sure to go down in MCDFNL history.
Maldon started the contest rather strongly in front of their home crowd, but Avoca still managed to build a 12-goal advantage at quarter time.
Despite the efforts of Maldon goal keeper Emma Webb, who was desperately unlucky with multiple interceptions being called back, Avoca sharpshooters Maddy Egan and Gina Beavis found their range instantly, combining for 20 goals with just one miss each.
Maldon also showcased some impressive prowess in front of goal, netting eight of their nine attempts.
The Bombers continued to fight as the game entered the second quarter, yet the Bulldogs started to assert control, taking a 43-16 advantage into half time.
Egan and Beavis were practically automatic in the second period, scoring 15 and eight respectively.
Avoca goal keeper Keisha Tonzing enforced a no-fly zone in Maldon’s goal circle, grabbing almost every lobbed pass the Bombers midcourt threw to their shooters.
Maldon’s shooters continued to make the most of their limited opportunities at goal, netting eight from 10 attempts.
The Bulldogs’ offence kicked into turbo gear after the half time break, scoring a mammoth 29 goals in the third quarter while conceding six to expand the lead to 50.
The Avoca midcourt gave Egan and Beavis chances aplenty in the third term, with Egan making 18 goals and Beavis scoring 11.
The Bulldogs finished the game with a flourish, scoring 28 goals in the fourth quarter to bring up the century, winning the contest by 75 goals.
The impressive landmark wouldn’t have been possible without the electric shooting of Egan and Beavis, with both making 14 shots in the final quarter and finishing with a shooting percentage above 85.
