2026 MCDFNL Netball Round 4 Preview — Carisbrook vs Maryborough Giants
With back-to-back defeats to Avoca and Navarre, the Maryborough Giants will strive to provide a tougher challenge to another contender in Carisbrook.
Even with a cameo appearance from two-time MCDFNL Team of the Year player Lacey Broad, a young Giants squad was unable to keep pace with the Grasshoppers on Sunday.
How young, you might ask? Well, five of the 11 netballers in Sunday’s A grade squad also played in a thrilling 18 and under match earlier that afternoon, with four of those players representing the MCDFNL at the interleague level last season.
While it’s a testament to the ability of Maryborough’s brightest stars and the success of the club’s junior netball program, growing pains are to be expected for a team gaining valuable experience at the senior level.
Despite their small sample size, the likes of Jorgia Brown, Kayley Walhouse and Amelia Reynolds have showcased their A grade potential in spurts, hoping to take further strides against a team fresh off playing in an early contender for match of the season.
Considering how tight the top four race was last season, Carisbrook’s enthralling one-goal triumph over Talbot could have massive ramifications on the finals picture. In terms of its immediate impact, Sunday’s memorable victory will provide the Redbacks a key shot of confidence following their disheartening defeat to Natte Bealiba in round two.
While Finley Wagstaff and Elise Mottram did an excellent job patrolling the defensive end, Abbey Nalder shook off her early-season shooting slump at the perfect time, with her 38 goals keeping the Redbacks ahead.
