Lexton return home in round three looking to get their season up and running, but they face a red-hot Harcourt outfit that has already shown it has the weapons to trouble the competition’s best.
The Lions made a powerful statement in round one, overcoming Talbot by 35 points in a performance that underlined their premiership credentials. After a tight first half, Harcourt blew the game open with a dominant third quarter, piling on seven goals through Mitchell McKnight, Nathan Anderson and Luke Burns to take complete control.
What would have pleased the Lions just as much was their defensive work. Led by Billy Quirk and Jordan Gartside, Harcourt restricted Talbot to just a single point in the final term, showing their ability to both attack and shut games down.
Lexton, on the other hand, come into the clash after a 16-point loss to Maldon, in a game where they were largely outplayed for three quarters. The Tigers struggled with composure and clean ball use early, allowing Maldon to control the tempo and build a match-winning lead by half time.
Despite the loss, there were encouraging signs late. Lexton showed spirit in the final term, with Jaxon Thomas kicking three goals as they finally found some run and carry. That last-quarter effort will need to become their four-quarter standard if they are to challenge a side of Harcourt’s calibre.
